Absinthe is an anise-flavored spirit created in the late 1700s in Switzerland. It rose in popularity in France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It became quite popular with artists and authors, with everyone from Oscar Wilde to Ernest Hemingway imbibing the potent drink. It was often referred to in literature as “la fee verte” (“the green fairy”), no doubt a play on its color and intoxicating effects

Traditional Absinthe Service

In traditional service, a specialized spoon is placed atop an absinthe glass, and a sugar cube is placed atop the spoon. The absinthe is poured over to coat the sugar cube and fall into the glass. The cube is lit on fire to caramelize and is placed under a spigot attached to a tower filled with ice water. The spigot is turned slowly to drip water over the sugar, extinguishing any residual flame and dissolving the cube. The glass is filled 2/3 of the way, and the spigot is turned off. The resulting drink is a virtual (and literal) cloud of anise and fennel flavor with a beautiful sweetness, the perfect end to any evening.

Horse Soldier Reserve Barrel Strength Bourbon

Three days after the aacks of 9/11, a group of Green Berets was sent to Afghanistan to assist in the efforts against the Taliban. While there, they befriended a local warlord also working against the Taliban. They were gifted 12 horses and together rode from village to village, liberating locals against oppression. Years later, two of the veterans, John Koko and ScottNeil, found a new calling after taking their first distillery tour: whiskey. They began another journey, studying with distillers in Kentucky, Ireland, and Scotland to perfect their newfound passion. e result is Horse Soldier Bourbon. Their bold, barrel-strength bourbon is handmade with all-natural ingredients. They actively employ veterans, and every bottle is pressed with steel from the twin towers in reverence to that fateful time.

Rare Hare 30 Year Aged Lucky Bastard Canadian Whisky

As if Playboy doesn’t do enough, they expanded their portfolio by venturing into the spirits division. Rare Hare 30 Year is a finely aged Canadian Whisky, overseen by experts in the fields of distilling, cooperage, and wine. Weekly tastings confirmed the integrity of the spirit, and the final product was aged for 120 days in Pineau de Charentes barrels, which are fortified wine barrels from southwest France made of native varietal grape juice and cognac. The result is a complex array of aromas and flavors to enjoy on its own. Trying this, you might consider yourself a "Lucky Bastard," a playful nod to Playboy's alleged legacy in gaming.

Glenfiddich 21Year Gran Reserva Single Malt Scotch

Glenfiddich, which means "Valley of the Deer" in Gaelic, was the dream of William Grant. Together with his nine children, the Glenfiddich distillery was built by hand and opened in 1887. Today, they have the most awarded and celebrated single malt Scotches in the world. The 21-year Gran Reserva is aged in Caribbean rum casks, giving it notes of vanilla, toffee, and fig. Not only do they make great Scotch, but the distillery is also doing its part for the planet by converting the distillery truck to run on bio-gas made from their own waste products.

Hennessy Paradis Cognac

Thee sixth-generation distiller, Maurice Fillioux, created Hennessy Paradis, and his nephew, Yann, elevated the eau-de-vie ("water of life") in 1979. Copper in color and silky on the palate, Hennessy Paradis is a nuanced array of fruit, nuts, herbs, and tobacco. The final blend can be made from up to 100 eaux-de-vie that range in age from 25 to 100 years.

Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year Bourbon

Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle, originally a salesman for W.L. Weller and Sons, bought the firm in 1908 and began a legacy that is still going strong four generations later. Pappy 10 Year is aged in virgin American oak and has a mash bill of corn, barley, and wheat, coupled with a splash of Kentucky limestone well water, to create a smooth character and mouthfeel. The bourbon is bottled at near-barrel proof by expert craftsmen.These craftsmen are not only skilled but also philanthropic. For every whiskey decanter they craft and sell, they plant a tree.
